:: Introduction & Purpose

REFLECTING ON THE PURPOSE OF THIS WEBSITE

As we all know, the purpose of this website is to act as a resource for saints and like minded people who are preparing for the tumultuous times that will lead up to the second coming of Jesus Christ. It is my personally held belief that the second coming of the Savior is much closer than many people realize and that, as prophesied, we are on the verge of radical changes in our society. We have been commanded many times to look for the signs of His coming and to prepare. – D&C 88:77-81).

I wish to make it perfectly clear that the AVOW website has no place for apostate doctrine, ideas, or teachings. I will take action against any and all that I believe are here to further an agenda that is not in harmony with the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Occasionally, I, or other members of this site, will present information, dreams, or opinions that some will consider fringe, unsubstantiated, scary, or otherwise difficult to understand. Personal speculation and free-spirited discussions about the future are an integral part of a preparedness-themed community. We often talk about the need for the Lord to gather His righteous saints to places of refuge or Cities of Light. We speculate on timelines, sequences of events, and signs of the times on a regular basis. We have free-spirited debates about conspiracy-theories, politics, the economy, and of course, all aspects of both temporal and spiritual preparedness.

I wish to say this clearly, and with all the emphasis of which I am capable: this site is not a place where you should learn what the Lord would have you do for yourself or your family. While this site can serve as a very effective catalyst to get you thinking about what the Lord would have you do, in the end such things must be a matter of personal prayer and fasting. Your unique guidance and direction will only come to you through the Lord, by way of the Still Small Voice. The scriptures and the words of the Brethren, combined with promptings and confirmations from the Holy Ghost, must act as your final guide. Any information you find on this site, regardless of how plausible it may appear to you, should be discarded without that personal witness and spiritual confirmation. In the same way, no matter how ridiculous or implausible something may seem to you, it should not be discarded before careful, prayerful consideration. If you choose to proceed forward without that prayerful consideration, then you are doing so at your own risk, relying completely on yourself, and thus the Arm of Flesh, to discern the truthfulness of it.

Neither the owners of this site, the moderators, nor the members claim to be Prophets, Seers, or Revelators for the Church or its membership. It is of deep concern to all of us when we see someone make decisions based on discussions or ideas presented here without first obtaining a sure witness that their actions are acceptable before the Lord. While many will post their own experiences and testimonies, it is up to each of us, individually, to obtain a confirmation of their truthfulness, and of their applicability to us. Many dreams may be perfectly true for the dreamer, but may not apply to the rest of us at all. Considering the subject matter that we are dealing with here and the potentially grave consequences from poor choices, any actions taken based on the dreams, visions or testimonies of other AVOW members without first having obtained that sure witness must be considered dangerous and irresponsible.

Please consider the following parable that Roger K. Young has used in his books.

Once there was a group of people traveling on a long and often difficult road in the wilderness, making their way towards a very special place. They had a map and some instructions on how to use the map to get to their destination, but now the road led upward into the mountains, becoming steeper, rockier and generally more difficult to travel. None of them had ever been on this road before, and there was some confusion about where they were according to the map. Some had even become discouraged because the storms were becoming stronger and more frequent. As they rounded a bend they came to a little spring where a family of fellow travelers were resting and preparing to travel on. Sitting on a nearby rock was one of the family members studying the map. Pausing to refresh themselves, they joined in conversation with the traveler and his family.

After finding out that the man had been sitting for several hours, map in hand, studying the surrounding wilderness, they asked him what his opinion was concerning their exact location according to the map. "Well," said he, "I've never been on this road before either, but I will share with you some of the things that I think I have figured out. I am by no means an expert or a guide, and so I would encourage you to take some time to ponder these things for yourselves." He then took the map and began indicating some of the landmarks on the map, pointing out various mountain peaks, passes, cliffs, rock slides, swamps, forests and other places, while at the same time gesturing at the surrounding countryside. "See this mountain peak on the map," he would say, "I believe that it refers to that very tall mountain over there."

After pointing out a dozen or so landmarks he went on to say, pointing to a spot on the map, "After looking at all of these landmarks, I believe that this spring where we are is right here. If that is correct, then actually we are pretty close to our destination. However, the road from now on becomes very steep, rocky, narrow, and treacherous, with almost no opportunity to obtain food or water until we finish the journey. As you know, the Master has sent some guides out, and for the last little while they have been indicating that we need to start packing some extra water and food in case we get caught in one of the storms. The legend on the map says that as we go on from here, the storms will increase and become very severe making this final part of the journey extremely difficult and dangerous. I would advise that if you haven't already picked up an extra supply of food and water, and made the final preparations for the last part of the journey, that you do so quickly."

"Oh, one last thing," said the traveler as his family began to load up and journey on, "the map says that there will probably be road washouts, bridges damaged or down, flash floods, unmarked quick sands, as well as other dangers up ahead. The Master's guides will be set along the way with directions and instructions on how to avoid or make it through these dangers, and so I would advise you to listen to them and follow their advice very carefully and quickly."

The travelers, weary from the steady climb over rocky ground made slippery from the now almost constant rain, came round a large rock outcropping and noticed a small shelter on the other side. As they headed towards it, they noticed a small group of people, among them the friend they had met earlier, further down the trail. As they drew closer, they realized that the group and their friend were just getting ready to leave, and were in the process of tying themselves together with rope.

Their friend saluted them with a warm greeting and expressed joy that they had arrived to join him and his family, if even for a brief moment. "Rest for a minute while you can, and get ready for what is ahead," he advised them. "The next part of the journey is extremely difficult and treacherous, and the Master has sent one of his Guides to come and show us the way. They alone know the way and are in constant contact with the Master, receiving the information needed to pass through the perils ahead. We have decided that the only way to make it the rest of the way is to rope ourselves to the Guide in order to not get lost in the darkness of the storms and chaos ahead."

"Take heart," their friend continued, "the guide has told us that though the path ahead, over the mountain, will be extremely dangerous and will test the endurance and faith of the best of us, in a relatively short time we will pass through the trials ahead and be in the very lush and beautiful Millennial valley on the other side."

"Unfortunately, the map of this part of the journey is not very clear, hence the need to stay extremely close to the guides. I'll share with you what I think I have learned about the trail ahead, for whatever benefit it might do you, but my understanding is very fragmented and unsure. Again, the only real safety is to follow the Master's Guides, obeying immediately every word of direction and counsel they give as if it were from the Master himself. To do anything less will surely invite disaster."

"I don't know if I will see you again along the trail ahead, but if not, hopefully we will have a great reunion in the valley on the other side." With that, their friend handed over to them a small packet of papers. Then he, his family, and the others all roped together in their group with one of the Guides, slowly trudged off into the rain and darkness...

DREAMS & VISIONS, TENT-CITIES

Central to the focus of this site is the concept of tent cities (or places of refuge as they are often referred to in the scriptures) as well as the dreams and visions of the saints.

One of the key reasons for this site is that, over the last few years there have been a few who have taught and written contrary to the teachings of the current and past Prophets and Apostles that we need not worry about such preparations at this time. They teach that the 2nd Coming of the Savior is 50-100 years away, often using the excuse that fulfillment of ‘missionary work to the whole world’ prophecies indicate that this is so. It is the belief which is specifically cautioned about in the scriptures.

However, it is our belief that very shortly, the world and society we know will drastically and suddenly change. The time is shortly coming which has been prophesied and seen in dreams and visions since the world began. Some of the material contained on this site, specifically the dreams and visions section, is one of the reasons we believe that this is so. However, we believe each person should read and study the materials, then prayerfully consider and ponder the meaning so that they can reach their own conclusions.

In my experience and study, I have seen that the Lord rarely does anything without preparing His people in advance by communicating to His leaders, and very often also to the people to be involved, about what is to come. Throughout the ages, one of His primary ways of communicating such information has been through the means of dreams and visions. Joel specifically said that this will be so concerning the last days. This site contains a few of these communications shared by friends and members of our community.

These dreams and visions are very sacred to those who have received them. Additionally, they have universally felt the need to share them with others in case what they find to be extremely important personally for them and their families might have some relevance, or at least strike a chord of familiarity, with others. This sharing is by no means an effort to try to claim revelation for others. They, nor I, claim any such authority, nor make any such declarations.

In the early days of the restored Church, even in ancient days, such personal dreams and visions were often shared with others as a way to bolster each other’s faith in the gospel. Occasionally, one person’s personal revelation had some meaning or importance for someone else, but that had to be, and could only be, determined by the listening person. So it is with the dreams and visions shared on this site. Only you can determine their meaning, importance, or relevance to you and your family. This is a responsibility you must not abdicate to anyone else.

And so the information presented here, consisting of dreams and visions along with numerous physical/spiritual preparation ideas, is for each individual member of this site to ponder, pray about, and decide if there is any relevance or importance for themselves and their family. Perhaps it is relevant, or perhaps not. It is only and exclusively for each of us to decide individually.

Of course, the community of people that make up this site, for the most part, through their own personal study, revelation, dreams, and prayer, believe that the Lord has prepared places of refuge for the saints to gather in the last days. Many of us believe these events are not far off. Thus you will find that there is a sense of urgency in our preparations. We stand firmly by the prophet. We wait for his direction and guidance, and we do nothing save it has been commanded by the Lord through the proper priesthood channels.

A SENSE OF FEAR AND PANIC

Over the years that this forum has existed, there have been thousands of Saints that have passed through its “doors” as part of their quest for further light and knowledge on preparedness and End Times. Most have come, visited for a short while, and then chosen to move on for any number of reasons. A few have found a home here and remained to help others along their quest. When a new member enters the site for the first time they are often overwhelmed with the material that is contained here. The dreams and visions of other saints come as a moment of awakening, while the depth of temporal preparedness information leaves many in awe of the sheer magnitude of the possibilities.

The unending news reports of local and world events carry profound implications, which are freely discussed. Couple all of that with the natural propensity to discuss the possibility that we really are in the end times, and many are left with a sense of fear and panic that fills them with dread and uneasiness.

It is my personal belief that this fear, or sense of sudden panic, is a very natural outgrowth of the awakening to our awful situation. As members come to more fully understand the true nature of the world we live in, and how fragile it actually is, the urge to prepare grows strong and hot. As they first begin to see their nakedness, they are overcome with their vulnerability and may panic in their attempts to get ready as quickly as possible.

Consider one of Roger K. Young's favorite stories: The Farm Hand Who Could Sleep Through Anything

There once was a farmer looking for a young man to help out at the farm. There were several young men who interviewed for the job and as far as the farmer could tell, they were about equally well qualified. He then asked them each one final question, “Tell me,” he would say, “why should I hire you above the others?”

Of all of the applicants and their replies, there was one that was really different. One young man said, “Because I can sleep through anything.” At first the farmer thought it was just strange. The more he thought, the more he was intrigued and mystified by the response. So he figured, well I will give this young man a chance, and hired him.

Weeks went by and the farmer was pretty happy with the young man’s work. He still wondered sometimes what the young man had meant by his strange reply, but he never got around to asking about it. Then one night the farmer was awakened in the middle of the night with a phone call from a neighbor. “There’s a big storm coming in with lots of wind, maybe a tornado. Better get ready for it.” was the quick message.

Indeed as the farmer went to the door and looked out, he found that the wind was strong and rising, and rain had started. He quickly ran and tried to awaken the young man to help him get everything ready for the blow. Try as he might, the young man couldn’t be stirred. Muttering to himself about what a stupid thing he had done in hiring a lazy boy who wouldn’t wake up when he really needed him, the farmer went out to the farm.

He went out to tie down the hay, but discovered that the hay was already tied down securely. Next he went to the barn and the corrals. Everywhere he looked, everything had already been prepared. After a time of just wandering around the farm, learning that there was nothing that needed to be done at the last minute, because it had all been done (prepared) before, the farmer returned to his house, but instead of muttering, he actually found himself singing the praises of this young man. He had realized, to his great joy, that the reason the young man could sleep through anything was because before he went to bed each and every night he had already prepared for the very worst. And so the farmer followed the example of the young man, since everything was already prepared, he undressed and was soon fast asleep, with a huge smile of peace on his face.

This young man had nothing to fear and was not stricken with panic at the onset of the storm because he was fully prepared. He had put forth the necessary time and effort to secure everything well in advance so he could rest the night through with little concern for the howling winds outside.

For those who are feeling overwhelmed with the task of becoming prepared, or for those who are concerned that they simply cannot accomplish the tasks laid out before them to become prepared for the events to come, please remember the words of the great prophet Nephi when he taught us that (1Ne 3:7). No matter what our level of preparedness, fear and panic are not necessary if we are striving to be obedient, for we have this promise from the Lord.

We are all familiar with that statement "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear" (D&C 38:30). But we must also bear in mind that this most powerful statement in the preparedness community has an equally powerful but completely opposite meaning – "If ye are not prepared, ye shall fear."

To take this a step further, it saddens me that we have so many members who struggle

to enjoy their lives after having “awakened” to our awful situation. When the events of the last days seem closer than we imagined, it’s difficult not to become pre-occupied with the future. While it’s easy to “not fear” for ourselves if we are prepared, we can still feel saddened for our loved ones who are not prepared. Such emotional preoccupation can quickly become overwhelming if we’re not careful. I encourage each and every one of us to prepare like the world will end tomorrow, but plan and live our lives as though the time is yet far away. If we can successfully find balance between these two activities, it is my opinion that we will each find comfort and peace in the days to come, regardless of what happens around us.

President Woodruff was known for doing today what needed to be done, without undue concern for what might occur in the future. On one occasion he was asked when the world was coming to an end. He replied, "Well, I don't know, but I am still planting cherry trees."

TEACHING PREPAREDNESS: ADVICE FROM THE BRETHREN

Not long ago, a senior church leader came down from Salt Lake City to Lake Havasu and had a word with my Stake President, who then called me into his office for a special meeting to discuss the activities of Roger and myself in getting people prepared.

As many of you may remember, a while back Roger and I were holding preparedness seminars to help people better understand and prepare for the events of the last days. About 6 months prior to this meeting, we had made the decision to discontinue the seminars, according to the guidance of the Spirit.

During his visit, it was conveyed that it was the opinion of the leadership of the church that the seminars Roger and I had been presenting were violating the free agency of the LDS people coming to them.

The concern was simple: Roger, apparently, had been doing such a good job at laying out all of the relevant scripture, quotes, prophecies, statements, and current events surrounding the last days that it would be all but impossible for someone to walk away from the body of the seminar and not know the truthfulness of it. Thus, by presenting them with, and placing so much truth upon them, we were violating their free agency by not allowing them to disown / disagree / leave with a reasonable doubt. We were, in effect, forcing accountability upon them, and thus making them more fully accountable for that additional knowledge than they would otherwise be ready for. – D&C 19:22)

I was also counseled that the manner of our presentation was not how the brethren would prefer this information be conveyed to the LDS members. They would, from this time forward, prefer to be responsible for the dissemination of that material in open public settings themselves.

What’s particularly interesting about the counsel provided by this good brother is that Roger’s books and this website were excluded from the guidance. Apparently, members willing to “seek out” this information by reading forum posts or studying books are viewed from a different perspective than those who simply “sit and listen.” I suspect it has to do with taking much more deliberate actions to buy the book and read it, and to participate here over the course of much time. Perhaps time is a central component. However, this is just speculation on my part.

Also, interestingly, this counsel did not pertain to us holding the same types of meetings for non-LDS members.

To this end, brothers and sisters, it is the renewed mission of this site to exercise great care in not violating anyone's free agency by confronting them with the words of the prophets and apostles. Just because it is so, and we happen to know it, does not give us the right or the authority to accost someone with that information. I was told in no uncertain terms, this is not how the brethren work, and it is not how I should proceed in the future.

Obviously, this issue has nothing at all to do with the truth of the message (quite the opposite, in fact). It has everything to do with each person’s personal desire to accept more truth and light. If they are not ready, able or willing to progress, then we should not push them along. They must come at their own speed, and in their own time. I was told that we must present the information in the same manner as the brethren do it -- with gentleness, meekness, humbleness and longsuffering. We are not to inspire fear, panic, or distress as motivators. Temporal preparedness needs to be an outward manifestation of inward spirituality.

SPECULATION AND TIMELINES

One of the activities that takes place on this site on a regular basis is speculation and discussions about possible timelines and future events. I believe this is a natural consequence of having a group of like-minded people in a social setting. Discussions about “when” and “how” are inevitable, but represent nothing more than the opinions of the various participants in the discussion.

Of course, we know that the specifics are not important. As I’ve explained above, the brethren have taught us not to use fear as a motivator for obeying the commandments. It is my personal hope that each person who is a member of our site will understand that our discussions around these topics are meant to serve as a “spiritual snack” for those who have made it an interest of theirs to study these events. I, and we, certainly don’t intend to get caught up in focusing too much on the “when” and “how” at the cost of ignoring the more important question, which is, “Are we ready?” While I believe strongly that helping people understand the specifics of the events may encourage them to prepare a little more thoroughly, I also humbly accept the guidance from the brethren to be careful in the way such speculation and discussions are handled.

CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THIS SITE

It seems as though every day I am accused by someone new of some wrong-doing related to this site. Whether it’s intentionally spreading fear and panic, priestcraft, teaching false doctrine, or hyping last-days events for some sort of personal gain, at this point I’ve pretty much heard it all.

While the members of this site are certainly not prophets, there are times when I think that we all feel like Samuel on the wall: warning others of the coming of the Savior and begging them with all our might to get ready, all the while dodging the arrows of those who simply don’t want to hear it. - Elder Joseph Eckersley, Conference Report, October 1907

I believe people learn and hear things differently from the Spirit. I believe this website has acted as a tool in the past for helping people find answers they’ve been seeking. I believe it will continue to serve as such a tool for as long as the Lord will allow it. I would encourage any who find the contents difficult to deal with, to prayerfully consider whether they should stay here, or move elsewhere so they can learn of these things in the ways that will work best for them. As long as we are all preparing spiritually and temporally, I salute everyone’s efforts, regardless of whether or not this site is part of them.

Another key challenge I and the other moderators deal with on a daily basis has to do with contention, disagreements on various topics, and in general, how others choose to treat one another in the forums. Unfortunately, in an online community, it’s all too easy to lose site of the fact that real people are on the other end of the comments. It’s easy to say something, or read something, in a different context than it was meant. While I’m not aware of a single online community that doesn’t deal with these types of issues, I’m proud that we expend so much effort trying to keep these problems under control. As Lehi said, (2Ne 2:11)

Holding different views or conversing about points of disagreement does not constitute contention. Neither does an argument or a debate, if (a big if) it can be done with a peaceful spirit and method. In short, the kind of contention treated here consists of disagreement plus a wrathful spirit or a quarrelsome method.

We hold our members to a high degree of accountability. We expect them to behave, and to treat one another in a way that would be pleasing to Christ. While we certainly understand that no one is perfect, we also reserve the right to take action against those who violate this rule. Despite our shortcomings, we try very hard to ensure that this site remains a (D&C 132:8).

Some choose to question our policy on charging for a membership to this site. I can certainly understand hesitation on this matter. Anybody charging for gospel-related services should be subject to scrutiny. Prior to my assuming the role as site owner, all of the content was available for free. Unfortunately, the project was not sustainable. It was losing large amounts of money. This site receives large volumes of traffic. It requires dedicated hardware in high-end internet data centers. It requires on-going maintenance, license fees to pay for software we use, and countless hours of my personal time, and the time of many others, in operations and management. Quite simply, this site would not be sustainable without a subscription service. It's interesting that some people have such a hard time with the concept of paying for these types of services. The church distributes countless amounts of information, services, and books for money. Examples include The Ensign, Deseret Book, the distribution center, and more. In most cases where actual cost is involved to produce and/or manage the content, the church requires a fee to help cover those costs. Unfortunately, we must do the same.

I wish to make it clear that I have always, and will always, provide discounted (or free, if required) memberships to those who wish to be here but simply cannot afford it, or for those who have fallen on hard times. I hold nothing for ransom.

Another issue many struggle with is the idea of “private” content on the site. Please understand, brothers and sisters, my intent is not to hold information ransom except to those willing to pay fees. The information on this site deemed private, or protected, is set that way generally at the request of the content owner. Examples include someone who has posted a private and sacred dream with the wish that it not be distributed outside of the trusted members of this site, or someone who has worked many hours to produce a book, but chooses to give it away for free to friends on our site. While it's true that a membership fee is required to view this content, the problem is rather incidental. The information is kept private to prevent wide-spread distribution at the request of those who created that content, not as a means to extract membership fees. As stated above, nothing here is held for ransom.

CONCLUSION

My brothers and sisters, please remember that I am but a fellow traveler on this journey. I hope, quite simply, that this site can act as a tool and an aid in your preparations. I am not privy to information from the Lord that you do not have. I am not a prophet, a seer, or a revelator. I do not have any stewardship or authority over you. I simply interpret what I have been given for myself and occasionally, when prompted, share my conclusions and ideas. We have all been given the same map, the same directions, and the same destination.

As the brethren have taught us many times in the past, all the money and all the preparations in the world will not save you in the events to come unless you are spiritually prepared. Temporal preparedness should be your second priority after your spiritual preparations.

I humbly ask that you do not treat anyone on this website, especially me, as bigger than life, nor should you regard anything I say or do with any special “weight.” We are all equals before the Lord. I have no special calling or authority over you. The Lord is our Master. His prophets are our guides. The Holy Ghost is our watchman. We are in this together.

May God bless you all in your efforts!

Christopher Parrett

What our members are saying...

I personally enjoy coming here because I do not have the time or ability to read and be aware of all that is going on around us. This is a great resource, from those who share the same gospel background to report and share with the rest of us. It fuels my thinking and helps to bring into focus or remembrance the teachings of the prophets in the scriptures or in our day. Read More
